The techniques used to create these shirts are inspired by the traditional art of Japanese resist dyeing (Shibori). The methods used to create the patterns are not completely controlled and the effects rendered can sometimes be unpredictable, and while similar patterns can be created, no two shirts will be exactly the same.
With this series my goal was to depict scenes that look as if they were painted by light and shaped by water. The scenes mimic landscapes, waterscapes, skyscapes and patterns in nature and in anatomy such as the human spine.
Although these images are inspired by nature, they are simply abstract patterns, and their interpretation relies on the human psychological phenomena known as pareidolia. These shirts are a contemporary take on an ancient traditional craft. It is abstract art on a t-shirt, meant to be wearable as a statement but at the same time subdued enough to be timeless.
My hopes are that you as I, see something beautiful within them.
